Movies: The best and worst of 2003
Most Highly Anticipated Movie: Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King
Forget about Neo, the movie everyone's been waiting for is The Return Of The King. Unfortunately, it also does mean that the trilogy will come to an end...
The Lack-Of-Creativity Award: Pirates Of The Caribbean
This movie was based on a theme park ride and inevitably led to Haunted Mansion (starring Eddie Murphy), another movie based on a Disney ride. What's next? It's A Small World: The Movie?
Best Movie Based On A Book You Won't Want To Read: Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World
It's a 20-volume series. 'nuff said.
The 'Why, Oh Why Didn't I Take The Blue Pill?' Award: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions
The story should have ended with The Matrix. I should have woken up in my bed and believed whatever I wanted to believe, instead of following Neo deeper and deeper into a rabbit-hole that didn't go anywhere.
Best Ensemble Cast: Love Actually (Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant)
This award goes to them less for acting ability than for being the best motley bunch assembled for a film. In other words, kudos to the casting director. How could one go wrong with the Firth-Thompson-Neeson-Rickman-Grant-Knightley combo? Throw in a delightful performance by EastEnders' Martine McCutcheon and a cameo by Rowan Atkinson, the cast of Love Actually is a true gem.
Biggest Bomb: The Hulk
A highly anticipated movie by a well-respected director (Lee Ang) that turned out to be a major drag. The big green CG-ed angry blob lumbering around on screen didn't help. The giant rabid dogs scene provided some hilarious moments, which were probably unintentional.
Worst Sequel/Prequel: Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd
The prequel to Dumb And Dumber sinks to even lower, unthought-of depths. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are sorely missed.
The 'What Were They Thinking?' Award: Brad Pitt voices Sinbad in the animated movie, Sinbad
Why would anyone pay to LISTEN to Brad Pitt?
The Team That Can Do No Wrong: Pixar
Pixar's Finding Nemo was a true delight for the young and old. The vibrant animation of the underwater world dazzled and awed, the storyline delighted and amused. Their other animated feature films -- Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc -- have also made it big. Pixar's next animated film, The Incredibles, which is expected to open late 2004, has a hilarious teaser trailer, and looks set to be another winner.
